Gold Coast organ and tissue donors save nearly 140 Australians

Gold Coast organ and tissue donors helped save the lives of almost 140 transplant recipients last year – through 20 organ donors and 116 tissue donors.

The achievement was announced at a DonateLife Week seminar earlier this week promoting the importance of organ and tissue donation and encouraging registration – currently just over 1-in-4 Queenslanders (27%) are registered as Organ Donors.

Tina Coco from DonateLife Queensland said: “Over the years, Gold Coast has consistently had a high donation consent rate which illustrates the generosity of Gold Coast people.

“With around 1,400 Australians waiting for a life-saving transplant, the generous act of organ and tissue donation has a far reaching effect, changing the lives of both transplant recipients and their families,” she said.

Ms Coco encouraged Gold Coasters to join the Australian Organ Donor Register online – it takes less than two minutes – by filling out the registration form at www.donatelife.gov.au
