UPDATE: A man has been charged over the armed robbery of a Mermaid Beach convenience store.
It’s alleged the 34-year-old was holding a hammer when he demanded the shop’s worker hand over cash and cigarettes around 3am on Thursday.
The man is also accused of grabbing a handful of scratchies before running from the Gold Coast Highway business.

He and woman were found at a nearby by police a short time later.
The man has since been charged with armed robbery and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.
The 17-year-old woman was charged with one count of possessing dangerous drugs and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on June 22.
EARLIER: A man and woman are being questioned over an armed robbery in Mermaid Beach on Thursday morning.
Police say a man holding a hammer walked into a convenience store on the Gold Coast Highway at 3:00am and demanded cash and cigarettes from the person working there.
The staffer did what he wanted. Then it’s alleged the man walked around the counter and took a number of scratchies before walking off.
Police went to the shop and found a man and woman on the beach a short time later.
No one was hurt. Investigations are continuing.
