Gold Coast police officer to stand trial over chase

A senior Gold Coast Police Officer has been ordered to stand trial over a pursuit, during which shots were fired.

Senior Constable Barry Wellington and colleague Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley followed a car from Surfers Paradise to Pacific Pines in May last year.

Wellington faced court on Tuesday charged with dangerous conduct with a weapon.  It has been reported that they were twice ordered to abandon the chase.

Police Union Chief Ian Leavers was at Southport Court last time Wellington appeared and told media “unless you’ve been an Officer and had your life threatened, you’ll never truly understand what it’s like”.

Senior Constable Wellington will face a two-day hearing in September.
