Gold Coast resident suffers critical injuries after confronting late-night fisherman

A man is fighting for life in hospital, after an alleged assault in Southport early this morning.

Police say a group of three men were returning to their car after fishing in waterways near Barney Street just after midnight.

A verbal altercation then broke out between them and a 45-year-old resident from a nearby unit complex, before the resident came out into the driveway.

One of the members of the group allegedly punched the resident in the face, which caused him to fall backwards, hit his head on a skip bin and then on the concrete.

The group called emergency services, before the 45-year-old was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

A 33-year-old has since been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and will front Southport court on October 19.

Investigations are continuing.
