Gold Coast residents warned of threatening phone scam

Police are warning Gold Coasters to remain vigilant of a SCAM which is currently occurring.

Runaway Bay Police Station has had in an excess of over 10 persons who have informed them that they have received a call from a male person claiming to be from the ATO ( Australian taxation Office)

The person on the phone is allegedly claiming that money is owed to them and stating that if you do not pay, your house will be seized by the ATO and you will also be arrested.

They then allegedly direct you to withdraw a large sum of money from your personal account and then tell you to attend the post office, who will provide you with instructions to deposit the money.

“DO NOT DO THIS! THIS IS A SCAM AND THIS IS NOT THE ATO,” Police stated.

The ATO would not contact you via phone nor will the ATO make threats to you over the phone.
