Gold Coast road closures for bike race

There will be some interruptions on Gold Coast roads on Sunday, with a major sporting event underway.

The Peaks Challenge is a joint event put on by Bicycle Network and Bicycle Queensland..

The Gold Coast is hosting the opening race of the 2016/17 series.

A collection of European-style cycling events, Peaks Challenge rides offer amateur cyclists the opportunity to test their stamina and strength on some of Australia’s toughest cycling climbs.

Bicycle Network’s Chief Executive Officer, Craig Richards, said that anticipation was high as Peaks Challenge makes its return to the Gold Coast.

“With both returning riders looking to complete unfinished business as well as Peaks Challenge first timers, there are more than 600 cyclists itching to push themselves to their absolute limits on Sunday,” said Mr Richards.

“The 235 kilometre circuit including 4,000+ metres of climbing and the formidable Henri Robert Drive at 18% will test the physical and mental strength of every rider out there.”

650 road cyclists from across Australia and overseas including Singapore, New Zealand, North America and Hong Kong are competing.

Mr Richards also said that it was fantastic to see cyclists from all around Australia and overseas taking part in the event.

“Peaks Challenge has put Gold Coast and South East Queensland on the map for bike riders. The Gold Coast Hinterland is one of the most spectacular parts of Australia to ride and we’re so happy to be able to open it up to cyclists from around the world.”

“Along with Bicycle Queensland, we look forward to welcoming riders and giving them a Peaks Challenge experience to remember,” added Mr Richards.

The competitors left Stadium Drive in Robina at 5:30am and are expected to return between 1 and 6:00pm.

Roads affected and the times are as follows:

*6:50am – 7:50am, 145 Guanaba Road, Tamborine Mountain. Access is only via a detour after 6.00am – Henri Robert Drive is closed but access is possible via the Goat Track, or Mystery Drive and Beaudesert-Nerang Road.

*8:30am – 11am, Rosins Lookout, 1477 Beechmont Road, Lower Beechmont

*10am – 12:30pm, Gold Coast-Springbrook Road at Mudgeeraba.

Due to the high number of cyclists taking part in the ride, there will be a series of changed traffic conditions and areas of restricted vehicle access within the region.
