Gold Coast school evacuated over ‘gas smell’

FIREFIGHTERS have rushed to a Gold Coast school after reports of a gas smell in the area.

Emergency crews were initially called to Benowa High School around 9.00am.

Students were forced out of their classrooms for a brief period. Firefighters have since tested the school and deemed it safe for students to return to class.

Crews have now made their way to Benowa Primary School across the road with reports of a strange gas-like smell as the facility as well.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson has confirmed crews will remain on the scene for a little while to continue air-testing.

External gas specialists have also been called to the scene.
