Gold Coast teen critical after collapsing during soccer game

A teenage girl is fighting for life in hospital after collapsing during a soccer game in Surfers Paradise overnight.

Ava Azzopardi is understood to have suffered a “serious medical incident” after taking to the field at the Surfers Paradise Apollo Soccer Club around 6.30pm on Friday.

Nine Queensland Ambulance crews, including critical care paramedics and the High Acuity Response Unit, responded to the incident.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said the 14-year-old was treated at the scene before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Football Gold Coast has since released a statement on Facebook, confirming Ava is now in an induced coma.

“Football Gold Coast would like to send our thoughts and prayers to Ava Azzopardi, who is in an Induced Coma at the QLD Children Hospital after collapsing at last nights girls U14/15 Division 1 Grand Final against Magic United,” the post said.

“The Azzopardi family have expressed a heartfelt thankyou to all the first responders who kept Ava alive until the paramedics arrived.

“Football Gold Coast in conjunction with Football Queensland have offered expert critical councillors at Runaway Bay Soccer Club from 10am today to all the families and football players to support them.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ava Azzopardi and her family.”
