Gold Coast teen pleads guilty to murdering grandfather for hidden fortune

A Gold Coast teenager will return to a South Australian court today after admitting killing Adelaide pensioner Robert Whitwell.

19-year-old Brittney Dwyer from Ormeau is the granddaughter of the 81-year-old.

She and co-accused Bernadette Burns admitted travelling from Brisbane last year to rob Mr Whitwell of his life savings, but their plan went wrong, and the elderly man ended up being killed in the ordeal.

Prosecutors, who described the killing as “almost sociopathic” have yet to detail many of the circumstances surrounding the case.

The court has been told, however, that Dwyer was convinced her grandfather kept hundreds of thousands of dollars hidden in his backyard shed.

The case will be mentioned today in the Adelaide Supreme Court at the start of sentencing procedures.
