The 43-year-old woman complied and handed over a sum of cash from her purse at which time she felt a jab to her shoulder.
The man fled the scene before police arrived. A syringe was located on the ground nearby.
Detective Inspector Mark White from the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) briefed the media on Monday afternoon.
“Obviously the female victim concerned is quite upset over what has taken place,” Det Inspector White said.
“Any offence of this nature which involves a syringe is a degree of unknown.”
Police are still looking for the robber, who is only described as wearing dark sunglasses and a black beanie.
The receptionist now faces an agonising wait for test results.
