Good Samaritan shot trying to stop Qld car thief

A man is in a serious condition after being shot while trying to stop a would-be car thief near Mackay overnight.

Police say the 34-year-old victim confronted a man attempting to steal a car from outside a Bold Street motel in Walkerston around 7.45pm.

The alleged thief then pulled out a gun and is accused of shooting the Good Samaritan in his abdomen.


The victim was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

“Other members of the public managed to restrain the offender with police arriving on the scene soon after,” Queensland Police said.

A 35-year-old Walkerston man has since been charged with attempted armed robbery and assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed.

He is due to appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court tomorrow.
