GP co-payment scrapped

THE $7 Medicare co-payment has been scrapped.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has today announced the government will introduce an optional co-payment to replace the plan to charge patients an extra $7 GP fee.

Instead, doctors will be responsible for deciding whether to bulk bill their patients or have them make up the difference.

Bulk billing for pensioners and children under 16 remains in place.

“There will be no change to bulk billing for children under 16, for pensioners, for veterans, for people in nursing homes and other aged care institutions,” Mr Abbott said.

The new measures apply from July 2015.
