Grandmother wins $10,000 on $1 scratchie

A GOLD Coast grandmother has returned home from a day out shopping with more money than what she started with after winning $10,000 on an instant $1 scratchie she bought with her coffee.

The woman was out shopping in Nerang with her adult granddaughter when she purchased the scratchie.

Speaking to Golden Casket officials this morning, the overjoyed woman said she was “thrilled”.

“My granddaughter and I decided to have a girl’s day out and go shopping,” she said gleefully.

“We had finished shopping and went to have a coffee, and there was a newsagency near the coffee shop, so I thought I would buy some Instant Scratch-Its tickets for us to enjoy.”

The woman bought three tickets, one for herself, and one each for her son and her adult granddaughter.

“I scratched mine and I thought ‘No, it couldn’t be!’ So I did all the maths and checked it over and over again,” the winning woman said.

“It was a total spin out! My granddaughter won $2 and I won $10,000! So we both had wins!,” she said.

“We were so happy but really, really shocked! The biggest thrill I got was actually telling my son I had won and seeing the look on his face.

“The most I have ever won is $50! I am happy with any win, but this is amazing!

“I am feeling really lucky now. I feel as though I should go out and buy everyone an Instant Scratch-Its ticket so they can all experience a win too!”

When asked how she planned to use her instant win, the Nerang woman admitted the shopping would continue and she would share it with her family.

“I am going to buy a boat for my whole family to enjoy! So we can eat lots of fresh fish,” she said.

“The fish will go straight from the boat to the pan – you couldn’t get fresher or nicer fish than what my son catches!

“I couldn’t think of anything better than sharing it with my family and eating fresh fish every day.”

The woman purchased the winning $1 Raining Cash Instant Scratch-Its ticket at My Centre Nerang.

Co-owner of Nextra Village News Barrie Williams said he was thrilled to have helped deliver a $10,000 win to one of his customers.

“It is fantastic!” he said.

“It is great the top prize went to such a deserving winner. She was so excited and really appreciative.

“Our last big prize was about six months ago, so we were due for a win!

“I hope we deliver more big wins to our customers in the future.”

Last financial year, there were 158 Instant Scratch-Its top prize winners across the Lott’s jurisdictions who collectively took home more than $11.28 million.
