Grenfell Tower charity song soars to top of charts

The star-studded cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water has broken records, opening at Number 1 on the UK singles chart.

The charity project, assembled by X-Factor guru Simon Cowell and featuring Robbie Williams, Craig David, Roger Daltrey, Emeli Sande and members of One Direction, was recorded in response to the tragic Grenfell Tower inferno.

All money raised will help support those who were left homeless when the 24-storey public housing block in London when up in flames.

At least 79 people perished with the death toll continuing to climb as investigators comb through the shocking scene.

The cover of the Simon & Garkfunkel classic features 50 artists including Jessie J, Stormzy, James Blunt and Rita Ora and has replaced Adele’s Hello as the fastest selling single of the decade.

The charity single was released on Friday and quickly notched up 120,000 combined sales (digital and streaming) on day one before racing past 170,000 units.

Elton John still holds the record of the UK’s biggest day one sales of all time for his 1997 Candle In The Wind tribute to the late Princess Diana, also a charity single.
