Groundbreaking flu vaccine for seniors

Ground-breaking flu vaccines will protect thousands of Gold Coast seniors this flu season.

The two new vaccines, Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose®, have been fast tracked by the Turnbull government to ensure lives are saved.

Gold Coast seniors will have free access to the extra effective vaccines through the National Immunisation Program from April.

Member for McPherson, Karen Andrews says around 75,000 Gold Coasters will receive the vaccine, hoping it drastically improves the horrific flu season we saw last year.

“More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by people aged over 65 years of age.
“We must continue to do all we can to protect those who are most at risk,” she said.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said these new vaccines have been specifically designed for those over 65, as their immune systems respond less effectively to the generic vaccines.

“These new trivalent (three strain) vaccines work in over 65s by generating a strong immune response and are more effective for this age group in protecting against influenza.”

“Vaccination saves lives and they are fundamental to our health system.

“We encourage all Australians aged over six months old to get a flu vaccination this year before the peak season starts in June,” he said.
