The man, aged in his twenties, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

Five guards were also injured in the melee, but all have since been discharged from hospital.

South Australian Department of Correctional Services boss David Brown said the incident was “very serious”.

“This is clearly a very serious incident,” Mr Brown said while speaking to media at a press conference shortly after the incident.

“I personally and the officers of my department understand and take very seriously our responsibility where a use of force is required to bring a dangerous situation under control.

“I would also like to pass on my thoughts to the family of the prisoner who is now in a serious condition in hospital.”

Exact details of the incident remain unclear at this time.
