Gunfire, explosions heard at popular tourist hotel in the Philippines
UPDATE @ 10.00am: The gunman who opened fire at a popular tourist resort in the Philippines is dead, police have confirmed.
Manila’s regional police chief Oscar Albayalde told a radio station in Manila that the suspect “killed himself”.
The attack was not believed to be terror related, with reports it may have been a robbery gone wrong.
Several people were treated for minor injuries including smoke inhalation.
EARLIER @ 4.45am: A popular tourist resort in the Philippines has been placed in lockdown after masked gunmen reportedly stormed the complex and opened fire.
Authorities rushed to Resorts World in the capital of Manila after reports of explosions and gunshots from the entertainment resort.
Pictures and videos have appeared on social media overnight, showing plumes of smoke pouring out of the building.
Resorts World Manila tweeted that the complex was in lockdown.

A source at one of the resorts told Reuters that employees were being evacuated and declined to give more details. He said police were in control of the situation.
It was not immediately clear how many people may have been injured or killed, although there have been reports of serious injuries.
The Company is working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees are safe.
