Handcuffed man on the run in NSW after escaping police custody

Police are desperately appealing for public assistance after a man escaped from custody while being led into the back of a caged police truck at Parkes overnight.

Police said officers were escorting Garry Charters from Forbes Police Station when he managed to escape and run into a nearby park.

“About 8.15pm on Thursday 10 November, police officers from Lachlan Local Area Command were escorting Garry Charters from Forbes Police Station to a caged truck.

“As the officers opened the rear door to the caged truck, Mr Charters, who was wearing handcuffs ran from police into a nearby park.”

Police conducted an extensive search of the area overnight, however have failed to locate him.

He is described as being Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander in appearance, with a fair complexion, 182cms tall, solid build, with short blonde hair.

Police have appealed for anyone who knows the current whereabouts of Gary Charters not to approach him but to contact Forbes Police or Triple Zero immediately.
