A YOUNG man in his 2os has been killed after the car he was in was ripped in half in a catastrophic crash on the Sunshine Coast.
The 22-year-old man was sitting shotgun in a vehicle which ploughed into trees at Mitta, northwest of Maleny, last night.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle while overtaking a line of cars on Maleny-Kenilworth Road just after 8.30pm.

The vehicle left the road and crashed into a number of trees at high speed.
The force was so great, the vehicle was ripped in half on impact.
Police described it as a “harrowing scene”.
“It’s not one we come across often…the car has subsequently split in two,” police said while speaking to reporters at the scene.
The driver, a 39-year-old man from Nambour, was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with possible spinal injuries.
Investigations into the accident are continuing.
