Head and neck cancer patients invited to free Gold Coast forum

Cancer Council Queensland is reaching out to Gold Coast locals affected by head and neck cancer through a free community forum this month.

Living with Head and Neck Cancer will be held on Friday, July 15 from 10am – 12pm at Cancer Council Queensland, 1 Short Street, Southport. The free forum will be held in support of World Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Day (July 27) and will provide information about head and neck cancer, offering ways to manage and improve health and wellbeing during and after treatment.

More than 760 people in Queensland are diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year and sadly around 240 die from the disease.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the forum would cater to men and women diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and their family and friends. “We know that Queenslanders diagnosed with head and neck cancer can experience a range of medical, psychological and social challenges at all stages of their journey,” Ms Clift said.

“This forum will help those diagnosed with cancer better understand the disease and how to cope with the physical, emotional and lifestyle changes that occur. We will also cover the importance of nutrition, how to manage dental care during and after treatment, and what support services are available on the Gold Coast.”

Ms Clift said guest speakers included a clinical nurse, oncology dietician, registered nurse and head and neck cancer survivor. “Our aim is to offer a supportive environment for locals to meet and talk with health professionals and others who have had a similar experience,” Ms Clift said. “If you’ve been affected by head and neck cancer, or have cared for someone affected, we encourage you to join us.”

Bookings are essential for the free forum and are required by Wednesday, July 13. To reserve your space call Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 or email communitysupportservices@cancerqld.org.au.
