HEADS UP: Burn-off likely to result in heavy smoke in and around Southport

RESIDENTS living in and around Southport may see or smell smoke within the next few hours as crews conduct a hazard reduction burn in the area.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have advised crews will set fire to an area of bush along Smith Street, across the road from the new Athletes Village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The burnoff is scheduled to start near the intersection with Parklands Drive at 5.30pm and will last for a few hours.

Residents in the area are urged to close their windows and doors, with smoke expected to affect the area.

Northeasterly winds are likely to fan the smoke towards the southwest, over Ashmore and Molendinar.

Residents suffering from respiratory conditions should keep their medications close by.
