Heartless thieves scamming elderly home owners

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after receiving reports of a scam targeting elderly residents on the Northside of Brisbane.

People, posing as tradesmen, approach residents and offer to conduct urgent repairs and or remove possums from victim’s home.

The urgency of the repairs is stressed with residents- who are aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s- feeling obligated to commence the work immediately.

Payment is required before work can start. The fake tradespeople then enter the home of the victim and steal money or property whilst inside.

The ‘promised’ repair work or possum removal is never carried out.

Anyone who may have been a victim of the scam, or have information which could assist police with their investigations is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

To ensure you are not becoming a victim of fraud, it is essential you remain alert and attempt to check the credentials of tradespeople offering unwarranted assistance. If you have an elderly neighbor or family member be sure to advise them of this scam.
