Heavy police presence as Gold Coast prepares to ring in New Year

Police have beefed up resources to ensure New Years Eve celebrations run smoothly across the Gold Coast tonight.

Despite soaring COVID-19 cases across the state, thousands of people are expected to let their hair down to ring in what has been yet another difficult year for many.

A number of large events are set to take place across the city, along with the much-loved fireworks spectacles at several locations including Paradise Point, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, the Broadwater and more.

Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wilman has warned officers will be out and about in big numbers.

“We will have a robust policing response operating at all large locations, including Main Beach and Burleigh Heads etc,” he said.

“But we also have bolstered our policing response into areas such as Coomera, so the northern end of the district as well”.

Gold Coasters are being urged to plan their night out ahead of time, to avoid any regrettable last-minute decisions.

“Don’t use vehicles, if you’re considering having even one or two drinks, it’s very easy to slip into having more than you should,” Acting Chief Spt Wildman said.

“The next thing you know, you’re either going to come to our attention by drink driving, or even worse, put other road users at risk”.

Businesses required to abide by the state’s vaccine mandates have also been warned police will be on patrol.

“We have to remind businesses, especially licensed premises and cafes etc, that the business requirement around double vaccination and checking-in is still very much a live situation for us,” Acting Chief Spt Wildman said.

“We will be doing some compliance operations to make sure businesses are doing the right thing, but also the community”.
