Help small businesses by shopping local for Christmas

WHEN looking where to buy the perfect present for Christmas, we’re being urged to put local small businesses at the top of the list.

The Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman said supporting small businesses helped keep the economy growing in local communities and ensured more Queenslanders are employed locally.

“There are so many reasons to buy local gifts this Christmas including high quality products and service, one-off designs, small batch production and exclusive craft,” Ms Fentiman said.

“From unique jewellery designs at a local craft market, celebration food from your favourite provedore, your children’s first bicycle at the local bike shop or even bon bons and decorations – shop local and support our small shop owners.”

“Wherever you live, share your dollars by buying local and celebrate small businesses across the state.”

National Retail Association CEO Dominique Lamb said by supporting local businesses in the lead up to Christmas, Queenslanders are also supporting local jobs and the state economy.

“Whether it’s buying Christmas presents for the kids, food for the big day itself or if you’re doing general last minute shopping, we urge Queenslanders to support local retailers,” Ms Lamb said

Minister Fentiman said small businesses represent 97.4 per cent of all businesses in the state, employ around 44 per cent of Queensland’s private sector workforce, and are vital in driving jobs and economic progress.

“A strengthened local economy creates an environment where new businesses can open and existing businesses can grow, creating more opportunities for everyone including more local jobs,” Ms Fentiman said.

“With Christmas just around the corner, we’re encouraging people to shop locally rather than heading online to shops located outside of the state.

“There are lots of great businesses across Queensland covering everything from fashion to homewares, great local produce and unique craft products.

“Most have an online delivery service which is also convenient when they are locally-based.”
