LLEYTON Hewitt has been guaranteed a place in his favourite ATP Tour event — the Aegon Championships at London Queen’s Club — after tournament officials decided to honour the Australian’s farewell season with a coveted wildcard.
Hewitt, who memorably beat Pete Sampras in the 2000 final aged just 19, will make his 16th and last competitive playing appearance at the tournament alongside defending champion Grigor Dimitrov and Andy Murray from June 15-21.
The event, which has a rich tradition of providing the Wimbledon champion, is Hewitt’s last lead-up event before he returns to the All England Club for the final time as a player.
“It took us roughly two seconds to decide to guarantee Lleyton a wildcard,” tournament director Stephen Farrow said.
