High-security inmates trigger tense seven-hour siege at SA jail
A TENSE seven-hour siege involving more than a dozen high-security inmates at a prison in South Australia has come to an end.
Authorities were able to bring a peaceful end to the stand-off at the Port Augusta prison late last night.
It all began on Friday afternoon when a group of inmates went on a rampage, smashing furniture before barricading themselves in a gym where they remained for seven hours.
A number of CCTV cameras were also destroyed during the melee and one inmate sustained head injuries. Under plice guard, he was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
Police said the incident was eventually brought under control through negotiation tactics and without the use of physical force.
