The Arts Centre Gold Coast Blue Love

Hilarious parody of love in the suburbs

Intense physical theatre, film and dance merge in Blue Love at The Arts Centre Gold Coast from 27 to 30 September.

Award-winning choreographer Shaun Parker’s latest work is inspired by famous works of art, theatre, music and film; all of which deal with the concept of love. This quirky, character-based work is a multi-media, physical theatre comedy. It’s accessible, challenging and enormously entertaining.

Parker wanted to create a work about romantic love. ‘I was inspired by how romantic love runs rampant through all art forms, both popular and high-art, and provides such juicy thematic fodder for artists and audiences alike. It’s a topic that everyone knows only too well,’ said Parker.

‘Enter our characters, Glenn and Rhonda Flune. They believe that they are the perfect couple, and in believing so become the tenuous, sometimes fabricated, sometimes real storytellers of Blue Love. They and their ‘sketched-out’ living room become the canvas for our story as they reference film, dance, text and song in playing out their relationship.’

Originally created as a short film, Blue Love has screened in Athens, London, Berlin, Melbourne, San Francisco, Krakow and at the Verona Film Festival, Italy. The film won Best Dance Film at the Australian Dance Awards.

Blue Love was then developed into a full length physical theatre and dance work in Berlin. Seasons have now been performed in Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Singapore.

Critical praise for Blue Love has been high, with the Daily Telegraph describing it as ‘cutting edge’ and ‘brilliant’ and The Advertiser describing it as ‘funny, lyrical, surprising and mischievous …a zephyr of cool cleverness.’

Shaun Parker is perhaps best known for his work as a featured dancer on Moulin Rouge, and as a choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance, but his impressive resume has taken him around the world. Prominent works include large-scale festival production Happy as Larry which toured to 49 cities worldwide and two dynamic outdoor dance works which premiered at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
