Man found dead after being swept away in raging floodwaters near Gympie

UPDATE @ 9.15am: A MAN who went missing after his vehicle was swept away in raging floodwaters near Gympie overnight has been located deceased, police have confirmed.

The 67-year-old man and his wife were travelling in separate cars along Marys Creek Road around 6.50pm when the man crossed a flooded causeway in his vehicle.

It’s believed the man travelled half way across before he became stranded.

When he attempted to remove his vehicle from the causeway it was swept away, with his traumatised wife watching on in horror.

Police and swift water rescue recommenced their search at first light this morning and located a car submerged further down the creek just after 6.00am.

Tragically, the man was found dead inside the vehicle.

EARLIER @ 7.00am: A woman has been left traumatised after watching her husband get swept away in floodwaters at Marys Creek, near Gympie overnight.

Police said the 67-year-old man and his wife were travelling along Marys Creek Road around 6.50pm when they stopped at a flooded causeway and got out of their vehicle.

Officers said it’s believed the man got back into his car in an attempt to move it from the causeway, however was swept away.

The man’s frantic wife, who was uninjured, phoned emergency services, with Police and swift water rescue rushing to the scene.

A major search for the man and the vehicle remains ongoing this morning.
