The Herald Sun reports The Department of Health raised the alarm after noticing an unusually high number of newborn deaths at The Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital.
In a press conference this morning, Health Minister Jill Hennessy explained that one doctor, who is no longer working at the hospital, is at the centre of the investigation.

While a small number of the babies and mothers had medical conditions which may have lead to the deaths, Ms Hennessey said seven of the deaths may have been avoidable.
She said is was a “truly heartbreaking set of circumstances”.
All 11 deaths occurred during or shortly after their birth.
