Human trafficking to blame after 8 bodies discovered in hot truck in the US

Eight people have been found dead inside a tractor trailer parked at a Walmart store in Texas, with authorities saying they were victims of “ruthless” human traffickers.

Another 30 people, who were suffering heat stroke and exhaustion, were found with the bodies in the trailer.

US Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Richard Durbin, said the truck’s driver was arrested and will be charged.

“All were victims of ruthless human smugglers indifferent to the well-being of their fragile cargo,” Durbin said.

The temperature had been close to 40 degrees when they were discovered.

Experts have warned in recent months that tougher immigration policies could make it more difficult to stop human trafficking, as measures to harden borders would encourage would-be migrants to turn to smugglers.
