Ikea issue warning after two toddlers crushed and killed by same set of drawers

TWO toddlers have tragically died after being crushed to death by the same model of drawers sold at the Swedish homewares store.

For those who have bought the ‘Malm’ chest of drawers from Ikea, you are being warned to ensure that you use the wall anchor kits that the drawers are sold with, as the furniture piece is known to tip over if it is not properly secured to the wall.

The ‘Malm’ range is sold in Australian Ikea stores and comes with a wall anchor, however authorities fear consumers don’t use the anchoring kit to secure the drawers to the wall.

In February 2014, two-year-old Curren Collas from Pennsylvania died after a Malm chest of drawers tipped over and fatally pinned him against his bed.

Just four months later, in June 2014, a 23-month old from Washington died after he became trapped beneath the Malm chest that tipped over.

Both chests had not been secured to the wall, even though the drawers were sold with the anchoring kits.

Ikea are now desperately warning consumers to use the anchoring kits before another tragedy strikes.
