Illness affecting Thompson’s chances for SUNS’ final practice hit-out
YOUNG SUNS defender Rory Thompson is facing a race against time to be fit for the Gold Coast’s round one opener against Richmond.
The 22-year-old’s dealing with a gastro bug which struck in the lead-up to last weekend’s NAB Challenge match against Brisbane.
According to the SUNS’ website, Thompson’s only completed limited training this week, leaving a question mark over his availability for Sunday’s final practice match against Collingwood.
Thompson was already dealing with a limited pre-season, after having hip surgery in November.
Coach Guy McKenna hasn’t ruled out his defensive pillar for Sunday’s match, but admits Thompson’s availability is “day-by-day”.
“He is so important to us, we have to make sure we think about what his preparation is like for the whole season,” McKenna said.
“If that means he has to miss a game, then he might have to.”
