Inmates suffer serious burns in NSW prison fire

Several people have suffered burns, two seriously, after a fire erupted at a correctional centre in the Hunter region overnight.

Police say that at about 8.20pm, emergency services were called to a Cessnock correctional facility following reports of a fire within a cell.

Two inmates, aged 21 and 24, suffered serious burns and were treated at the scene by Paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore hospital.

Twelve Corrective Services officers were treated at various hospitals for smoke inhalation; two were also treated for burns.

Detectives from the Central Hunter Local Area Command are investigating the fire.
