Intruder allegedly tried to rape 57-year-old woman during dawn break-in

A MAN has been charged after he allegedly broke into a home near Byron Bay and tried raping a 57-year-old woman as she slept in her bed.

Police said the 39-year-old man forced his way into the woman’s Blackwood Crescent home at Bangalow around 4.30am this morning.

While inside the home, the man allegedly entered the 57-year-old woman’s bedroom and woke her up, demanding money.

He then allegedly attempted to sexually assault the woman who police said managed to break free and run into another room of the house.

Police said the woman locked the door and started to scream out for help.

The man allegedly continued to rummage through the woman’s home while she was barricaded in the room.

He left the premises with a stash of stolen property before police arrived at the scene.

The 39-year-old man was arrested in Deacon Street two hours later following a foot pursuit.

He was taken to Byron Bay Police Station and charged with aggravated break, enter and steal and attempt sexual intercourse without consent.

He was refused bail to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow.
