Italy withdraws 2024 Olympic bid

Italy has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games in Rome, due to financial concerns.

The city’s mayor, Virginia Raggi, fears like Athens, the Games would bury the Italian capital in debt.

Paris, Los Angeles and Budapest remain in the running to stage the 2024 summer games.

Mayor Raggi had repeatedly flagged its opposition to hosting the event in the lead up, arguing the city had more problems to deal with.
