EARLIER : Mauboy was supposed to sing the national anthem at the Melbourne Cup yesterday but was reportedly dumped at the last minute because of a wardrobe issue.
The pop princess was introduced by announcers at Flemington Racecourse before officials quickly changed it Nadia Aya, one of Jessica’s back-up singers.
2GB radio host Alan Jones today suggested Jessica was axed at the last minute because she refused to wear a pair of shoes supplied by race sponsor, Myer.
No official explanation has been given for Jessica’s no-show as yet, but The Australian reports Jessica’s representative has admitted there were issues over “clothing and preparation”.
There are also reports the singer went missing once she got to the track, despite being photographed on her way to the Cup in full racewear gear.
In a statement released yesterday, Victorian Racing Club President Simon Lowe criticised the Jessica no-show.
“We were very disappointed that Jessica Mauboy was on course, and didn’t perform today,” the statement read. “We were grateful that Nadia Aya could perform the national anthem ahead of the Emirates Melbourne Cup.”
