She became a household name after coming second on Australian Idol in 2006, but Jessica Mauboy has revealed she never would have been on the show if it wasn’t for her father.
Speaking to InStyle, the singer said her father borrowed money to pay for a domestic flight so she could audition for the reality show. “Dad said, ‘I borrowed it, I’ll work and give it back’.”
The 26-year-old, who was only 16 when she auditioned for the show, said she was terrified of letting her father down after he sacrificed so much to help her achieve her dream. “That’s what worried me – that I would fail in what I love the most and that I would have failed my parents.”
