John Muntz Bridge to reopen after Cyclone Debbie destruction

Gold Coasters in the northern end of town will he happy to know that the John Muntz Bridge will be reopening today.

Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey said construction on the bridge, which was destroyed by Cyclone Debbie, is about a month ahead of schedule.

“Well its fantastic news for everyone who uses the John Muntz causeway,” Minister Bailey told myGC.

“We’ve had a few breakthroughs and it’ll be open this afternoon.”

Minister Bailey says a specific time has not yet been set, with the opening dependent on the weather today.

He did however say that it will definitely “be open in time for people to come home from their traditional work day” and encouraged motorists to check in with the Queensland Traffic website for the latest.

Two lanes of the bridge will be open, with single lane closures occurring occasionally as construction continues until the end of August.

Minister Bailey assured Gold Coasters that the design of the bridge had been “improved further up the river” to deliver a stronger structure.
