Jordan Spieth added to list of athletes to pull out of Rio Olympics

Golf’s World No.3 Jordan Spieth has pulled out of the upcoming Rio Olympic Games, citing concerns surrounding the Zika virus.

The young American is the latest high-profile player to pull the plug on the event, joining World No.1 Jason Day, No.2 Dustin Johnson and No.4 Rory McIlroy.

Australian Adam Scott has also announced previously he will not be competing.

Spieth will be replaced by Matt Kuchar in the event.

It’s understood the 22-year-old will reveal more details about his decision to withdraw at a press conference before the Open Championship on Tuesday.

His decision to pull out means the highest ranked player at the Games will be World No.5 Bubba Watson, who will represent the United States alongside Kuchar.

The Olympics take place from 5 to 21 August, with the men’s golf tournament from 11 to 14 August.
