Julian Wilson through to third round at Lower Trestles

Sunshine Coast surfer Julian Wilson continues his strong form to progress to third round of the World Surf League’s Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles.

The world number five has never won at Trestles, he was a finalist in 2013, and said he had a strong game plan to get to the third round this time around.

“That was a tough heat. Strategy came into play a lot,” he said.

“I didn’t feel like I was on the best waves. I had to find my opportunities. I was just looking for any waves to get up and find scores on.”

The Aussie managed to pip Brazilians Caio Ibelli and Jadson Andre in the first-round heat.

This continues his surge to championship contention after winning in Tahiti last month.

Gold Coaster and three-time world champion Mick Fanning also made it to the third round of the event in California.

Fanning beat Ezekiel Lau and Michel Bourez in the first round.

Australians Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright and Joel Parkinson have all been knocked out.
