Kenyan defends Gold Coast Airport Marathon title

Effortless Kenyan runner Kenneth Mungara has seen off Japanese rival Yuki Kawauchi to claim back-to-back Gold Coast Airport Marathon titles.

He crossed the line in a time of 2:08:58, just shy of the course record (2:08:42), in stunning conditions at the Southport Broadwater Parklands.

“I’m very happy because I have done my job,” Mr Mungara said after the race.

“But I missed my target of (going under two hours and eight minutes),” he added.

“Maybe next year!”

Misato Horie from Japan won the women’s event, smashing the female course record in the process (2:26:41) and claiming a personal best time.

The course record was also broken in the Wheelchair Marathon, with Australian Olympian Kurt Fearnley wiping three minutes off the previous best time to finish in 1:30:18.

Rio Paralympic hopeful Christie Dawes was the first woman across the line (1:51:13).

Earlier on Sunday, the half marathon was won by Duer Yoa (1:03:49) with Cassie Fien winning the women’s event (1:11:20).
