Kidnapped echidna gives birth in Currumbin

An echidna kidnapped from the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has become the proud mother of a puggle.

Short-beaked echidna, Piggie, was stolen from her enclosure in early August, but was handed back in to the wildlife park a few days later.

Shortly after her return, keepers paired Piggie with breeding male Spike and soon discovered she had a single egg in her pouch.

Keepers were shocked to discover Piggie had an egg as usually echidnas do not reproduce when they are stressed.

The puggle hatched on September 29 and currently weighs 620 grams. Keepers do not know yet if it is a boy or a girl.
