Two young brothers aged nine and 11 are fighting for their lives in hospital tonight after the family car left the road and crashed into a tree near Goulburn this afternoon.

Police say the family’s Mitsubishi dual-cab utility was travelling along the Hume Highway at Yarra when it left the road and slammed into a tree at around 2pm.

Two boys aged 9 and 11 who were travelling in the back seats were critically injured.

They were treated by ambulance paramedics at the scene before being flown to Canberra Hospital where it’s believed they remain in a critical condition.

Their 33-year-old mother who police say was driving at the time escaped uninjured. She was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Their father, who was travelling in the front passenger’s seat, also escaped uninjured.

Officers are reminding motorists to take additional care, with extra holiday traffic and difficult conditions currently being experienced on the state’s roads.
