Kirra will be flying high on Saturday 21 October, with the return of two iconic events on the same day – the Kirra Criterium Classic and the Gold Coast Festival of Kites.
The biennial Gold Coast Festival of Kites will light up the skies from 10:00am – 4:00pm on Saturday 21 October at Kirra Beach, with the country’s best kite flyers performing stunt displays, giving locals the opportunity to watch the spectacle and fly their own kite.
Running in conjunction with the Kite Festival on the Saturday, the Kirra Criterium Classic will see Australia’s most elite cyclists compete on a thrilling 1.2 kilometre circuit in Kirra’s main precinct, offering one of the best backdrops for speed cycle racing in the country.

Connecting Southern Gold Coast CEO, Peter Doggett, said he was thrilled to see both events return on one huge day for locals and visitors to enjoy.
“Kirra is the perfect stage to host sporting and community events,” said Mr Doggett. “The Gold Coast Festival of Kites is a huge drawcard for visitors and we expect to see an exciting program with some of the leading kite flyers attending in 2017.
“In addition to the Kites, there will also be plenty of two-wheeled action with the Kirra Criterium Classic providing the ultimate speed cycling spectacle right in the heart of Kirra.”
Local kids will also be the stars of this year’s Criterium, with the all-inclusive Kids on 2 Wheels cycling challenge kicking off at 10am on the Saturday, giving kids aged 3 – 12 the opportunity to bring their own bike and helmet and ‘race’ along the closed course circuit.
Mr Doggett said the Southern Gold Coast is the place to be in October. “We encourage all the community to come and enjoy a great day of exciting action on the road and in the sky.”
