Koala Breeding Season
Koala breeding season is here and everyone has an important role to play to keep them safe between now and January.
Koalas face increased threats during breeding season when adults move around the city looking for a mate and the previous year’s young disperse to find their own home range.
Koalas generally move between trees by travelling on the ground, mainly between dusk and dawn.
During spring and summer, they move even more frequently to avoid attack by aggressive birds – protecting their nest or babies.

To reduce threats to our koalas:
- drive carefully, especially between the hours of 6pm and 6am
- contain your dog at night – either in a kennel, small koala-proof enclosure or inside your house or garage
- always keep your dog on a leash when walking outside of an off-leash area
- create a koala friendly backyard by ensuring safe passage through the landscape
- report all joeys without a mother to Wildcare Australia immediately.
If you see a koala that appears sick, injured or in danger, is sitting on the ground, or is a joey without its mother – call Wildcare Australia immediately on 07 5527 2444 – then report your koala sightings online.
