Landmark media reforms expected to pass parliament
The Turnbull government’s landmark media reforms package is expected to pass parliament today after securing a deal with senator Nick Xenophon overnight.
If the new media laws pass the senate, it would allow a person to control three platforms (TV, radio or newspaper) in one single market.
At the moment, a company can only own two of the three.
The 75 per cent audience-reach rule would also be scrapped.
This is said to be the biggest shake-up in the media industry in 10 years.
A $60.4 million “regional and small publishers jobs and innovation package” will also be established by the Government under the new deal.
