Large grass fire causes chaos on M1

4:54PM: FIREFIGHTERS have extinguished a large grass fire both on the eastern side of the Pacific Motorway and in the centre divide at Ormeau.

Emergency crews were first called to the blaze burning around Lahrs Road around 12:20pm this afternoon.

All southbound lanes were initially closed to traffic when the fire first jumped into the centre median divide, however they were reopened a short time later.

TRAFFIC STOPPED

Police were on scene conducting traffic control to ensure the safety of crews still fighting the fire in the centre divide.

Energex crews were also on scene after a power pole was impacted by fire.

Fire crews also managed to extinguish a second smaller fire which started in the centre median approximately 500m north of Exit 54 (near dreamworld) at the same time.

By 3pm, the situation was under control.
