Last chance to petition for light rail stage two

MAYOR Tom Tate says an important petition to secure the second stage of the light rail is 2,500 signatures short of its target.

Locals are being urged to sign the online petition this weekend with the State Government likely to make its decision in coming days.

Mayor Tate said it’s important to get as many locals on board as possible, particularly with reports of an imminent State Government decision.

“Now is the time for us to send a clear message that we deserve a complete transport network that eases congestion and creates more local jobs,” he said.

“Local chambers of commerce are petitioning the State Parliament to secure a funding commitment and they need your support.

“It takes only a few seconds to sign the online petition and be part of this historic campaign.”

The ePetition is sponsored by Southport MP Rob Molhoek and has attracted 7,200 signatures since its August launch.

Surveys conducted by the Mayor’s office have demonstrated at least 95 per cent of locals in 72 suburbs support the connection to heavy rail before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
