Two of the leading contenders for the full marathon on Sunday hit the track at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre on Thursday to warm up for the big race.
Peter Some from Kenya is the fastest marathon runner heading into the race on Sunday, with a 2:05:38 personal best. It is expected he will lay down a strong challenge to last year’s winner Kenneth Mungara and the other elite male runners.
Gulume Chala from Ethiopia has the fastest recent time by any female runner in the race. Chala clocked a scintillating 2:23:12 to win last year’s Frankfurt Marathon.

The 38th Gold Coast Airport Marathon will take place over two days, Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3, with over 29,000 competitors expected to participate.
There is a race for all ages and abilities on offer including the full Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge, 4km Junior Dash and the 2km Junior Dash. All events will start and finish at the Southport Broadwater Parklands.
