More than 10,000 books are expected to be released into the hands of Gold Coast locals and tourists with the Somerset Storyfest Beach Library popping up on Surfers Paradise beach from today.
From Friday 8 February to 24 February, 10am to 5pm daily, visitors will be able to pick up a complimentary new or previously loved library book from bookcases lined on the sands.
Somerset Storyfest CEO Andrea Lewis said the organisation is excited to deliver the unique experience for the third year in a row and are thrilled to extend the activation from 10 days to 20 action-packed days of free books and seaside reading.

“The Beach Library activation has been hugely popular for locals and tourists over the past two years, due to its accessibility, the stunning backdrop of the ocean and the nostalgia of indulging in a hard cover book, whilst laying in the sun,” she said.
“Over the past two years the Beach Library has seen over 12,000 books be picked out of its shelves to find new homes, and this year we are expecting to set free more than 10,000 books across the next 20 days.
“Our mission is to inspire and encourage the community to read and explore thought-provoking ideas, and it’s great to see the impact a free library on the beach has on the community. Each year we see a host of volunteers, tourists and locals engage with the Beach Library and with each other, evoking a real sense of community.”
Somerset Storyfest is supporting City of Gold Coast Libraries’ work in igniting the passion for books and shedding light on literacy proficiency, with the Gold Coast Libraries is donating hundreds of previously loved library books as part of their ‘Books Set Free’ scheme.
Divisions 9, 11, 12 and 13 have also jumped on board in a joined effort to encourage donations within their districts through a community book drive, running from 4 February to 22 April. Locals within those divisions are encouraged to donate their previously loved books to their division’s offices, and see their books find new homes filling up the Storyfest Beach Library Activation this February and Little Lending Libraries around the Gold Coast in 2019 and beyond.
The 26th annual Somerset Storyfest is set to take over the city next month with an action-packed line up of sessions, networking events, workshops, panels and free, family-friendly community events from 20 to 22 March. For more information, visit: storyfest.com.au/
